Kanchipuram

Kanchipuram or Kanchi is a temple town 75 kms from Chennai ( Madras ) and 65 Kms from  Mahabalipuram in Tamilnadu in South India. The town is known for its numerous important and vibrant temples of Pallava , Chola and Vijayanagar dynasty and date back to 4th & 16th century AD. Kanchipuram is also known for its high-quality silk saris, woven on hand looms by thousands of families in the town and nearby villages.

Ekambareshwar Temple in Kanchipuram is a temple dedicated to God Shiva and was built in 1509 AD during Vijayanagar Empire and is associated with five elements specially the Earth. The temple has 57 meters tall Gopuram ( Gateway ) and 1000 pillars hall wherein each pillar has been carved with the sculptures of Hindu deities.

Varadaraja Perumal Temple is the 11th century temple built by Cholas dedicated to Hindu God Vishnu. The artistic highlight is the 16th-century ‘100-pillared’ marriage hall where pillars are superbly carved with animals, monsters, warriors and several erotic sculptures.

Kamakshi Amman Temple is the most imposing temple in Kanchipuram dedicted to Goddesses Parvati. The beautiful temple compound was built by Pallavas.
