Chittorgarh or Fort of Chittor, approximately 90 kms from Udaipur is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort was the capital of Mewar Dynasty till 16th century when the capital was shifted to more secure Udaipur. The fort has several historical palaces, gates, temples and two prominent commemorative towers.
Chittorgarh Fort of 7th century has been in control of the various rulers right from Hindu rulers to Muslim rulers. Hindu soldiers during under the command of different Hindu kings had lot of fights to capture the fort but were not able to succeed. Following these defeats, the women are said to have committed Jauhar or mass self-immolation. The rulers, soldiers, noblewomen, and commoners considered death preferable to the mass rape and pillaging that was thought to occur following to surrender to the Sultanate forces.
