Chidambram Temple also called as Chidambram Natraja Temple in Tamilnadu on the way between Pondicherry ( 68 kms ) and Thanjaore ( 115 kms ) is a temple in Tamilnadu dedicated to God Shiva was built in 12th & 13th century AD. With-in a wall complex with four gopurams ( entrance gates ) , the temple is the earliest example of Dravidian architecture. Of particular note at Chidambaram are the thousands of sculptures adorning its buildings. In particular there are many statues of women in a wide variety of dance postures. Visiting the temple during Abhishekam, a special puja when the priest chants holy mantras , is a special experience.
