Amritsar

The Iconic city of Amritsar in north of India in the state of Punjab is the home of the glorious Golden Temple is the spiritual and cultural center of Sikh religion. Founded in 16th Century , its name is derived from Amrit Sarovar ( Pool of nector ) amidst which stands famous Golden Temple or Harminder Sahib. The border with Pakistan lies roughly 30kms from Amritsar at Attari where flag -lowering ceremony is held at every evening. Amritsar also has linkage with the fight for the freedom from British.

Golden Temple Or Harminder Sahib is the biggest Gurudwara or Sikh Temple and is the epicenter of Sikh religion. This Sikh temple or Gurudwara ( Door to the Master ) is amidst a pool ( Amrit Sarovar – Pool of Nector )  was constructed between 1570 and 1591 AD by various gurus ( preachers ) of Sikh religion and is the most important pilgrim for Sikhs. It is called as Golden Temple as it is plated with Gold. The temple also perhaps has the biggest kitchen in the world to provide free food every day to hundreds of thousands of devotees from all around the world with-out any discrimination of religion , caste and society.

Jalian-wala-Bagh in Amritsar is associated with Indian Freedom from British where thousands of Indian patriots were martyred on 13th April 1919 AD when a British Army General opened fire on 2000 Indian patriots who gathered in this garden to celebrate the festival Baisakhi.

Flag-lowering ceremony at every evening at Attari-Wagha boarder, 30 kms from Amritsar is a daily military practice which Indian and Pakistan forces have been following since 1959. The ceremony starts with a blustering parade by the soldiers from both sides, and ends up in the perfectly coordinated lowering of the two nations’ flags It is called the Beating Retreat border ceremony on the international level.
